Dr. John Shiau is a board certified Neurosurgeon, well recognized and respected nationally for his participation and contributions towards the advancement of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. With over ten years of Neurosurgical practice within the New York tri-state region, his ever growing reputation and expertise in the field of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery have earned him consideration as one of New York’s leaders in the field. Dr. Shiau prides himself in his accomplishments as such, and is passionate in providing his patients with the best and least invasive neurosurgical care possible.
Having immigrated to the United States from Taiwan at three years old, Dr. Shiau was challenged with earning himself a place in society as an Asian - American. Even so, he surpassed educational and extracurricular requirements at an early age and Dr. Shiau earned acceptance into Harvard Medical School, The Julliard School of Music and ultimately his alma-mater, The University of Michigan. Selected out of only ten students Nationwide to attend University of Michigan’s Seven Year Medical Program in 1983, Dr. Shiau was confident that his dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon were a tangible reality. 1997, Dr. Shiau became impassioned with redefining the once feared practice of open and invasive spinal surgery. This desire led him to Mainz, Germany, where he would spend the next year becoming fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive and Endoscopic Neurosurgical Technique from Johannes Gutenberg University Hospital.
With an interest in advancing and perfecting Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Dr. Shiau embraced his career with an energetic and newfound sense of forward thinking. To date, Dr Shiau has been named faculty educator with numerous spinal device companies, teaching surgeons from across the globe his techniques in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery. Dr Shiau is well published amongst some of the leading Neurosurgery Journals, and has been consulted by several of the world’s leading spine product development teams to aide in perfecting spinal surgical instrumentation.
When not in the office or operating room, Dr. Shiau enjoys life as a New Yorker, with a loving and supportive family to keep him grounded. He has embraced the opportunity to travel the globe – thus far having been to Australia, Asia, South America, Spain and Europe to name a few. Dr. Shiau is avid about personal fitness and maintaining a healthy physique, even placing within the top ten finishers of a well-known Military style “Mud Race” in 2012. As a certified PADI Scuba Diver, he has logged over 1,000 Dive’s worldwide. Dr. Shiau is passionate about his Asian culture, despite having moved from Taiwan to the United States in 1969. This has encouraged him to remain a prominent member of the Taiwanese community. His cultural beliefs and ethical morality have shaped his compassionate outlook of patient care, as exemplified by his role in the gratis treatment of a wounded Afghanistan war veteran in 2012. Dr Shiau embodies the characteristics necessary to have helped lead the way in the Minimally Invasive Spine revolution, all while practicing humbly and in the best interest of his patients.
